For walls you build early, the Hedgerow: 360 health for 7 gold once it has grown, tougher than a Stick House for less. For the wall a wolf is chewing right now, a Brick House: 5 wolf bites. For gold, a Windmill pays for itself in 107 seconds.

| Farm | Size | Gold | Health | Build (s) | Wolf bites | Shepherd bites | Health per gold |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hay Block 1A single 1x1 bale. Plug gaps and block chasers in tight lanes. | 1x1 | 2 | 80 | 0.78 | 1 | 1 | 40 |
| Straw House 2Cheap 2x2 house of bound straw. The backbone of every fort. | 2x2 | 3 | 170 | 2.08 | 2 | 2 | 57 |
| Stick House 3A lashed timber frame, nearly twice as tough as straw. Build one, or upgrade a Straw House. | 2x2 | 8 | 320 | 3.38 | 4 | 3 | 40 |
| Brick House 4Red brick, three times as tough as straw, and slow to lay. Wolves hate these. | 2x2 | 18 | 510 | 7.8 | 5 | 4 | 28 |
| Hedgerow 5Planted thin, grows thick. Weak at first, four times as tough a minute later. | 2x2 | 7 | 360 | 2.6 | 4 | 3 | 51 |
| Big Barn 63x3 barn, the toughest farm: nearly three Brick Houses of health for the price of two. Slow to raise: the anchor of a fort. | 3x3 | 36 | 1400 | 9.1 | 14 | 10 | 39 |
| Windmill 7Fragile. Grinds +0.3 gold per second. Each mill after your first grinds half the last. | 2x2 | 32 | 120 | 5.85 | 2 | 1 | 4 |
| Beehive 8Bees chase nearby wolves and slow them 45%. | 1x1 | 30 | 200 | 5.85 | 2 | 2 | 7 |
| Shadow Shed 9Invisible to wolves unless warded or bumped. | 2x2 | 20 | 200 | 4.55 | 2 | 2 | 10 |
| Scarecrow 0Wolves see a sheep until they get close. Draw them away from your fort. | 1x1 | 10 | 60 | 2.6 | 1 | 1 | 6 |
| Grain Mill upgradeUpgraded windmill. Grinds +0.9 gold per second. | 2x2 | 30 | 160 | 6.5 | 2 | 2 | 5 |
| Plank Bridge BHow sheep cross water. Wolves swim slowly, so a plank buys you time, not safety. Wolves can chew it down. | 1x1 | 3 | 150 | 1.56 | 2 | 1 | 50 |
| Watchtower FA tall lookout. Sees far and rings a bell when a wolf comes into view. | 1x1 | 12 | 150 | 4.16 | 2 | 1 | 13 |
| Wool Wall CA wall of your own fleece. Costs a wool bale, no gold. | 2x2 | 1 bale | 225 | 1.56 | 3 | 2 | no gold |
Bites to break are for a farm at full health, with no Iron Claws: a wolf bites for 105, a Shepherd for 150, once every 0.8 seconds. A small pack bites harder (more than 3 sheep a wolf), and a Potion of Strength breaks any farm in one bite. Health per gold for the Hedgerow counts it fully grown. The Wool Wall costs a wool bale, not gold.
Which farm should I build?
Pick what you need right now.
Hedgerow
7 gold. It goes in at 90 health and grows to 360 over 60 seconds, so plant it while nobody can bite it. Grown, it is tougher than a Stick House and costs less.
Try a hedge fort on Easy
Brick House, or an upgrade
A Brick House takes 5 wolf bites, about 3.2 seconds of steady chewing, or one bite from a wolf carrying a Potion of Strength. It takes 7.8 seconds to lay and stands at part strength until then, so lay brick a little before the pack gets there. If the wall being chewed is a Straw or Stick House, upgrade it with U instead: it stays standing while it gets tougher.
Try it on Normal
Hay Block
The only 1x1 wall: 2 gold, 80 health, built in 0.78 seconds. It's also how you shut a door in a hurry. It breaks in 1 bites, so swap it for something tougher when you can.
Try it on Easy
Big Barn
A 3x3 wall for 36 gold and 1400 health, the toughest farm and nearly three Brick Houses for the price of two: 14 wolf bites. It takes 9.1 seconds to raise, so it goes up before the den opens, as the corner or the den-side wall the rest of the fort leans on, not as a patch for a gap the pack is already at.
Try it on Easy
Windmill, then Grain Mill
A Windmill is 32 gold for 0.3 gold a second: paid back in 107 seconds. Upgrade it to a Grain Mill for 30 and it grinds 0.9, paid back in another 50. Both are fragile, so they go inside your walls.
Try a 12 minute round, where mills pay most
Beehive
30 gold, 1x1. Its bees sting the nearest wolf within 7.5 tiles every 1.6 seconds, 45% slower for 2.2 seconds each time. A wolf working near it never gets back to full speed.
Try it on Normal
Shadow Shed
20 gold, and wolves can't see it until one comes within 3.6 tiles of its middle, bumps it, bites it, or plants a Watcher Ward near it. Use it as a hidden wall where the pack expects an opening.
Try it on Normal
Scarecrow
10 gold. Wolves see a sheep until one walks right up to it. A few placed between the den and your fort cost the pack the first seconds of the hunt.
Try it on EasyPlank Bridge
Sheep can't swim. A plank is 3 gold, built on water only, and you walk on it instead of round it. Wolves swim at 40% of their speed, so a lake buys you time, not safety, and they can chew the plank.
Try it on EasyWatchtower
12 gold. Your flock sees everything within 15 tiles of it and hears a bell when a wolf comes into view. Build it on the den side of your fort, behind a wall, and you get a warning before the pack reaches your door. 2 at a time.
Try it on EasyWool Wall
Shear your fleece (E, from 40) for wool bales, and each bale builds a Wool Wall with C: 225 health for no gold at all.
Learn Shear in the tutorialShould you upgrade or build new?
Two farms upgrade in place with U, and an upgrade keeps the damage the farm has already taken:
- Straw House to Stick House to Brick House: 170, then 320, then 510 health.
- Windmill to Grain Mill: 0.3 gold a second, then 0.9.
An upgrade costs the new farm's full price, so a Straw House taken all the way to brick costs 29 gold, against 18 for a Brick House built outright. Building brick from the start is cheaper. Upgrading is for the wall that is already in the right place and already being chewed: it never opens a gap, and replacing it would.
Are Windmills worth it?
Yes, early and inside walls. A Windmill pays for itself in 107 seconds, and one built the moment you can afford it (17 seconds in) makes about 105 gold more than it cost over a default 8 minute round. That is a whole extra fort. Every mill after the first grinds half as much as the one before it, so one mill is the buy; a field of them is not.
The cost is risk. At 120 health it falls to 2 wolf bites, a Shepherd's Torch burns it down, and when a sheep is tagged every farm it built goes with it, mills included. Late in a round a mill can't pay back before the clock runs out, so the last two minutes are for walls.
How do farm gaps work?
Every farm on land blocks movement, so every farm is wall. A sheep fits through a gap one tile wide; a wolf is too wide and needs two. That one rule is why forts have one-tile doors and why a Hay Block is the most useful 1x1 in the game.
The old Warcraft III hop works here too: build a farm on your own sheep and it is pushed to the nearest open tile, which can be the other side of a wall. You can't build where a wolf is standing, within 8 tiles of the pen, or inside the wolves' den.
Wall layouts that hold
Against the rock
Find a ridge or a stand of trees and build a half ring against it. Half the fort is free and can't be chewed. Put your door on the side away from the den.
Hedge ring, brick face
A ring of Hedgerows planted in the first 40 seconds, with Brick Houses on the side that faces the den, where the pack arrives. Windmill in the middle.
The maze
Rings inside rings with the doors out of line, so a wolf that chews through one wall faces another. It's what the game's own sheep bots build, and on Hard it is what you will have to break as a wolf.
How farms work
- Building takes a moment. A farm blocks the moment you place it, goes up at about a third of its health and fills the rest in over its build time: 0.78 seconds for a Hay Block, 5.85 for a Beehive. A Windmill earns nothing until it is up.
- You build right beside you. Click further away and your sheep walks there first. With Long Reach (20 gold) you build from up to 5 tiles away.
- Wolves are paid to chew. A wolf that breaks a farm earns a quarter of what it cost, at least 1 gold.
- A tag takes everything. A tagged sheep loses every farm it built.
- Demolish your own farm with X. Each sheep can have up to 160 farms standing at once.
