The short version

  • You can play without an account, an email address or a real name.
  • There are no ads, nothing to buy, and no chat.
  • We use Google Analytics and PostHog to see how the game is played. PostHog can record what happens on the page during a visit.
  • We never sell your data or use it for advertising.
  • Email [email protected] and we will delete what we hold about you.

Sheep Tag Online is made by Tin Whistle Games, which is responsible for the data described here. Reach us about your data at [email protected].

When you play

The first time you play, the game gives your device a random code. It isn't linked to who you are, and part of it is your public id on the leaderboard.

Your display name is shown to other players and saved with your scores. If you press Call the Discord, it is posted in our Discord. Don't use your real name if you'd rather not.

When a match ends, we save your result: the side you played, the difficulty, whether you won and your points. Online matches are saved as replays, without names, so they can be watched again and help us find bugs. Anyone with a replay's link can watch it.

For a match our server has checked, it also keeps the XP you earned and today's challenge progress under your device code, so your level can move to an account if you sign in later.

Like every website, we see your IP address. We use it for a few minutes to stop abuse and don't store it. Our hosting providers and the analytics services below also receive it.

If you report a player, we keep the reason, your note, the room code, the time, their name, their public id and account id if they have one, and your public id, and send it to a private moderation channel on our Discord. Your name and email are not sent. If you block a player, that stays in your browser, and with your account if you sign in.

If we act on a report, we keep what we did (changed or hid a player's name, or stopped them playing online), the public id or account id it applies to, when it ends, why, and when we did it.

Analytics

The game records events like a match starting or ending, a setting changing, or an error, with details like your screen size and the site that sent you. These events don't include your name or device code. Game events also say which day you first played and how many days ago that was, so we can tell whether players come back. Your browser keeps that date; it doesn't say who you are. The events also go, with page views, to:

  • Google Analytics (Google LLC), which sets its own cookies.
  • PostHog (PostHog Inc.), which can make a session recording: a replay of what happened on the page during your visit. Recordings hide what you type, and we don't link them to a name or account.

Neither service is told who you are. Copies of the game on other sites don't use either one.

If you sign in

Accounts are optional. You can sign in on any page of this site or in the game, with an email code, Google or Discord. It is the same account in both. Our sign-in provider keeps your email and, for Google or Discord, the name and picture they share. We use that only to sign you in and show you your own profile. Other players never see your email or picture.

Our server keeps your stats, level, unlocks, the looks you wear and your recent matches. It does not store your email or name.

If you block players while signed in, your account keeps that list (each player's code and the name they had), so the block follows you to other devices. Deleting your account deletes it.

You can delete your account from your profile in the game. It can stay in our backups for up to 5 days after.

Ideas, feedback and the Discord

What you send through the Ideas form or the feedback box goes to our Discord, where it stays. Please don't include personal details. Pages that show who is on our Discord load that list from Discord.

Notifications

Notifications are off unless you turn them on. If you do, your browser gives us an address at its push service (Google, Apple, Mozilla or Microsoft, depending on your browser) and two keys for it. We store those with a random code, your time zone, the time you picked, whether quiet hours are on and when we last sent one. Nothing else: no name, email or device code. We send one message a day at most, when new daily challenges are ready, and your browser's push service delivers it. Turning notifications off in the game's Settings deletes what we stored right away. If you block them in your browser instead, we delete it the next time you open the game or we try to send. We also delete it after 60 days without a visit.

What your browser keeps

The game saves your device code, name, settings, progress and the day you first played in your browser so they are there next time. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes them. Google Analytics, PostHog and, if you sign in, our sign-in provider set their own cookies.

Who else gets data

  • Our hosting providers, which run the site and the game in the United States.
  • Google Analytics and PostHog, for analytics.
  • Our sign-in provider, if you sign in.
  • Discord, for ideas, feedback, Call the Discord and the online list, and for player reports, which go to a private moderation channel only we can read.
  • Your browser's push service (Google, Apple, Mozilla or Microsoft, depending on your browser), only if you turn on notifications. It delivers them.
  • YouTube, for the videos on the history page. Their preview pictures load when you open that page, and the video loads only when you press play.

Each handles data under its own privacy policy. We don't share data with anyone else, and we never sell it. The game's data is stored in the United States.

How long we keep it

  • Single match results: 8 days. Totals on the all-time board stay until old devices are trimmed from it.
  • Replays and our own analytics events: until we delete them, or sooner if you ask. Replay links work for about 4 months.
  • Accounts: until you delete yours, plus up to 5 days in backups.
  • XP kept for a device code with no account: until you sign in, or until 8,000 other device codes have played more recently.
  • Notifications: until you turn them off, or 60 days without a visit.
  • Player reports: until we delete them.
  • Actions we take on a report: the action until it ends, and our record of it until we delete it.
  • Ideas and feedback: until we remove the message.
  • Google Analytics and PostHog: under their own retention settings.

Your choices and deleting your data

  • Play without an account and with a made-up name.
  • Block analytics with your browser's privacy settings or a tracker blocker. The game works the same either way.
  • Clear this site's data in your browser.
  • Delete your account from your profile in the game.
  • Leave notifications off, or turn them off in the game's Settings.
  • Email [email protected] to see, correct or delete anything we hold. For data tied to a device, include your public id from the leaderboard.

Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in Europe or the CCPA in California), you may have more rights, like objecting to analytics or complaining to your data protection authority. We use analytics because we have a legitimate interest in knowing how the game is played and what breaks. We will answer any request within 30 days.
